Despite pasing CAFTA by only two votes, the Bush administration continues to
negotiate new international trade deals based on the same failed NAFTA
model. It's time to stop - and adopt a new model for engagement with the
global economy.
The administration is now trying to complete a trade deal with Colombia,
Peru, and Ecuador known as AFTA, the Andean Free Trade Agreement. Like CAFTA and NAFTA, the AFTA deal would make people in the impacted countries poorer
while costing jobs at home. It would curtail environmental protection, deny
essential generic medicines to HIV/AIDS patients, and force many farmers in
the region to turn to coca cultivation. At the same time, the administration
is trying to increase the power of the World Trade Organization over local
and state governments, and use the WTO to require de facto privatization of
our public services.
We can do better. We can have international trade that raises living
standard, preserves jobs and family farms, protects the environment, and
respects democracy. Please tell your members of Congress that it is time for
a new trade model.
